Why Do We Procrastinate?
We know that procrastination can be lethal. By falling prey to the terrible habit of procrastination, we jeopardize our career, relationship and health by constantly and consciously sabotaging ourselves. Our minds are always worried about the things that should have been done and worst of all being haunted by the consequences of our past in-actions.
Is it agonizing to live like that? Of course it is! Are we subconsciously inviting all these negative feelings because there is something about procrastinating that makes us happy? You bet! To be honest, we actually love to procrastinate.
Am I the source of my procrastination?
First of all, you may be relieved to know that "putting things off" is a very human instinct. Just like water always like to flow in the easiest path. People also like to find the solution that is the easiest and with the least work required. However, in many situations, the easiest way may not be able to address the issue entirely. Everyone has that natural instinct to avoid doing something that they do not find pleasurable. It is a constant battle that most of us face everyday, especially for people like me who are self-employed. The difference is that some just have more discipline and motivation to do what they should be doing while others do not.
Learn from someone that has succeeded and turn the tide against procrastination.
Brian Tracy, a great motivational speaker and author, sums up this beautifully in one of his seminars "success is doing what should be doing, whether you feel like it or not". You can write this quote and place this near you Where You can see it as many times a day e.g. in your wallet or on your screen saver. Our mind is just like us, needed constant reminders hours after hours, days after days.
Even better, model after someone that has succeeded in their career, their relationship or any admirable facet of their life through persistent and unwavering strength to carry our massive action to change their life course. E.g. Donald Trump, Gary Chapman, Bill Gate, Warren Buffet, Adam Khoo, Rhonda Byrne... Do some background checks on these famous people and learn how they succeed. They can be a powerful and constant source of motivation for you to carry on your battle against procrastination and that support for your to be as successful as them in life.
