Faure's Requiem - Recommend a great recording?
Hi,
So I found myself listening to this a lot last night.
(It was the only relief I could find after Madrid's woefully awful display in the Champions League,enough about that though).
Anyway please let me know one of your favourite recordings of this work.
I don't mind which version as I have both the original and the 1901 large orchestra performance both directed by Philippe Herreweghe on the Harmonia Mundi label.
As many suggestions as possible please as there are quite a lot available,
so would like to get other contributors opinions.

Faurè’s Requiem op.48 (three versions starting from 1888) is one of the best pieces of sacred music ever. It is totally different from the most played and celebrated Requiems (Mozart, Verdi, Brahms, Liszt, Berlioz). It is simple, serene, extremely spiritual, very far from drama, tragedy, sense of guilt, bombastic evocations of death and revenge: all the equipment of the above works (some of which, especially Mozart, are absolute masterpieces nonetheless). The Sanctus is a serene vision of the joy of a universal embrace of us all one day in the afterworld: the alternance of children and adult voices and that light gaining its way in the final Bb major chord are the landmark of a great accomplishment, where Faurè pours all his organistic mastership.
Now, strange enough, there are few recordings available of this beautiful work, apparently unmercifully neglected by big names.
- A nice job was done by Harry Christophers with Academy of St. Martin in the Fields
- Two french renditions: Laurence Equilbey with Accentus Ensemble,Members Of The Orchestre National De France; and Philippe Herreweghe with Ensemble Musique Oblique
- My edition: Philip Ledger with English Chamber Orchestra (an excellent EMI rendition, along with the Messe Basse, another precious example of Faurè’s spirituality).
I notice that you quote the Herreweghe already. You won't find anything quite better than that.
