Since her emergence on the country music scene in 1987 with her first, selftitled album, Loveless has been one of the most popular female singers of the Neotraditional country movement, although she has also recorded albums in the Country pop and Bluegrass genres. Loveless rose to stardom thanks to her blend of honky tonk and countryrock, not to mention a plaintive, emotional ballad style. Her late1980s records were generally quite popular, earning her comparisons to Patsy Cline, but most critics agreed that she truly came into her own as an artist in the early 1990s. It was included on her first album with Epic Records, Only What I Feel, her sixth career album. The single was released in November 1993. It was the third single released from the album. You Will was also recorded as the title track of Canadian country singer Anne Murrays 1990 album. This song was one which Loveless originally recorded in the summer of 1992 for MCA Records, and in fact performed on a September 1992 CBSTV special Women in Country. However, the condition of her vocal cords had deteriorated to the point that medicine was ineffective, and surgery was necessary in order for her to continue her career. On October 21, she had the surgery. After a nineweek recovery period, she and her husband/producer Emory Gordy, Jr. went back into the recording studio to pick up where they had stopped the previous fall. Due to her surgery, the tone of her voice had changed, and all of the material she had recorded the previous summer had to be rerecorded. The first song Patty rerecorded was You Will.
