The nature and purpose of the 2nd Coming (Parousia) is not understood by the vast majority. It took me 14 years as a Christian before I understood it; and I began to look into it when the typical dispensationalist views did not add up. When I asked my pastor "what did Jesus mean by 'soon' back in the 1st Century, if He's still not arrived?" he responded, "Jesus meant that when Jesus did begin to come, it would all happen very quickly." I bought it for a while, until I noticed all the other time statements besides 'soon,' such as "at hand, in a little while, at the door, it is the last hour, about to come, shortly, near, and especially -- will not delay!"
So the Parousia of Christ was a 'Day of the Lord,' where God came in judgment upon the city of Jerusalem, which did not follow His covenant and even stoned the prophets and crucified the Messiah. At this time, the Old Covenant world was destroyed and the New Covenant (established at the Last Supper) began to exist on its own. Christ came for the saints and rewarded them for their faithfulness after enduring to the end - the end of the age. So the 'last days' were the end of the Jewish dispensation, culminating in the destruction of the Temple. Christ's return brought the "New Jerusalem" down from heaven to earth - indicative of God's presence moving from the Temple of stone to the temple of our hearts. "The tabernacle of God is now with men."
All of Revelation is past, which makes sense when you read the time indicators throughout the letter, which was written to the 7 churches in Asia Minor about 68AD. Much of it is written with apocalyptic language, which is symbolic, and when Christians mistakenly take it literally, they assume it hasn't happened yet. (sun darkenend, moon turn to blood - this is NOT literal, but metaphor for nations and rulers falling from power, which happened in 70AD.)
Jesus is here, reigning in His spiritual, invisible Kingdom that all Christians are a part of. There's a lot of questions people ask when they first realize this... way too many to address here, but if interested, see links which are a good intro to this view! I hope I helped.
