I'm a self-published writer who's searching for an agent to help me become the next famous writer.?

Agents are helpful because they send manuscripts to the top of the pile at publishing houses. They shorten the process of sending manuscripts and getting responses because they do the work for you. They also negotiate your contracts and deal with the finances.
There are a lot of shady agents out there. Reputable agents don't charge a fee for the work they do for you. They make money when they sell your book. They shouldn't charge you for anything; any costs they accrue in mailing your manuscript or arranging anything would be subtracted from the book's advance.
An agent takes a cut of the money you make from your book. Most agents charge from about 15-20%.
There are more agents in the US than in Canada. If you are Canadian, you should expect to sell your first book by yourself. Even if you live in the US, having a book already published is a great draw for an agent; that way they know you have something people want to buy.
Unfortunately, if you have already self-published the book, no publishing house will buy it from you. If you want to be taken seriously by the industry, you have to go through the competitive process of being accepted by a publishing house.
It's generally better to wait for an agent to come to you, but if you want to actively look, word of mouth is your best bet. Talk to other authors about their agents, ask friends, family members, and co-workers if they know anyone. Anyone can advertise, but you can't buy good word of mouth.
Don't be discouraged! The industry is a hard one to break into, but once you're in, things will get easier.
